Importing a Course or Course Content into Moodle

Last updated on Jun 04, 2025

This How-to page introduces the following two methods to import Moodle course content. Each section contains a tutorial video with an equivalent text-and-image based tutorial.

Import a course with Moodle's Import feature

In order to import Moodle content from a course (the "origin") to another course (the "destination"), you must be an Instructor, a Manager, or a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the destination course. You must also be an Instructor, a Manager, a Teaching Assistant (TA), or an Export-Only Instructor (EOI) in the origin course.

This method is best for importing a whole course or most of a course. Please follow the tutorial video below to perform import or refer to the equivalent text and screenshots below the video.

1 Go to the "Destination" course to initiate the import process.

The import process is performed in the "Destination" course or the course that you'll import content into. For example, if you want to bring content from an old course to a new course, you'll go to the new course to perform the steps below.

2 Click on "More" in the navigation under the course title and select "Course reuse".

3 Click "Import" and then select the "Origin" course you want to import content from.

Click Import and you should arrive on the Import page. You see a note at the top reminding you to make sure that you are performing the import in the Destination course instead of in the Origin course.

You should also see a list of courses that you have access to to import content from. If you do not see the course you need, you may use the search field at the bottom of the list to search for that course. Once you locate the course needed, select it, and click the blue Continue button.

4 Select the types of content.

On the "Initial settings" page, check or uncheck boxes to specify the content types you'd like to import. Typically, you do not need to change the default settings on this page. Click Next to continue.

5 Select the content you wish to import.

All of the activities and resources in the Origin course should be listed out for you. Check or uncheck items you would like to be imported. To avoid duplicates, we recommend unchecking the following three items in the General section because every course comes with these items already.

  • The Announcements forum
  • The "Welcome! By default, courses are hidden from students..." paragraph
  • The "Welcome Students!" paragraph

Click Next to continue.

6 Review your selections and click "Perform import" when ready.

Anything you chose to import will be marked with a green check mark, and anything you chose to omit will be marked with a red cross. Go to the bottom of the screen to click "Perform import" when ready.

Import Course Items with Sharing Cart

Sharing Cart is best used for importing a small selection of course sections or activities. It also requires you to have "Instructor" privileges in both the origin and the destination courses.

Watch the video below for a video walkthrough of how to use Sharing Cart or refer to the text and images below the video.

1 Add the Sharing Cart block to both the origin and the destination courses.

In both the origin and the destination courses, you must add the Sharing Cart block first:

  1. Toggle the Edit Mode on.
  2. In the Block Drawer on the right side, click Add a block at the top.
  3. Select Sharing Cart from the list of available blocks to add a Sharing Cart block.

2 Click on the Sharing Cart basket icons next to any items you would like to import

After the Sharing Cart block is added in a course, the Sharing Cart basket icons appear next to the activities and sections in that course.

Click on the baskets next to the activities and/or sections that you wish to import to a destination course. You'll see a pop-up window asking if you want to copy user data, which, in most cases, you'll want to leave as unchecked so that the activity or section copied into the Sharing Cart don't contain student information or data from the origin course. Click Confirm to copy the activity or section into the Sharing Cart block. You should see the copied activities and/or sections now listed in the Sharing Cart block.

3 Go to the destination course.

If you do not already have the Sharing Cart block in the destination course, you should do so now. If you already have that block in the destination course, you should refresh the destination course page so that the items you copied from the origin course shows up in the Sharing cart block in the destination course.

4 In the Sharing Cart block in the destination course, click the "Copy to course" icon to the right of the item you would like to import.

Go to the Sharing Cart block in the destination course, click the Copy to course button to the right of the items you wish to import/insert into the course. This prompts a dotted rectangle with an arrow inside to show up at the bottom of each course section in the middle area of the course.

Locate the course section you wish to add the copied item from the Sharing Cart and click on the dotted rectangle at the bottom of that section. The item should appear in that section, and you may drag and drop it to a desired location as needed.

Repeat this process for any other items you would like to paste into your destination course.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why are some of my imported items invisible, missing, and/or marked as an "orphaned" activity?

When importing more sections than is currently available in the destination course, Moodle will import items over but mark them as "orphaned activities" when edit mode is toggled until more sections are created. To remedy this issue:

  1. Click on settings in the navigation area under the course title at the top of the page.
  2. Locate the section labled Course format.
  3. In the dropdown for Number of sections, change the number to the total number of sections needed for your course
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save and Display. Your activities should now all have a section and be visible again.

I accidentally imported my course content twice, what should I do?

If you imported your course twice and have several duplicate items, you can use the Mass Actions block to delete all the duplicates at once. Visit Using Mass Actions Block for Bulk Editing for more detailed information on how to add and use the block.
